I think it shows the person being offered the fist that the Bumper doesn't think enough of the Bumpee to shake hands. Fist bumping got really big recently and became socially acceptable to some because of the the Grinning Skull, better known as Howie Mandel, a self-exclaimed Germophobe. I think it's a social hangup Howie has, similar to the late Howard Hughes, and recently the late Michael Jackson, who took being a germophobe to the max. People may think it's chic, but to me it's disrespectful. If I am offered a fist, there will be no bump. It's a handshake or nothing. I have never liked the fist bump.
